So I am sure you have heard by now that our very own Al Gore Jr won a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to bring Global warming to the forefront of America's concerns. Let's take a look at some previous winner's (and nominees) of the award named after the guy who invented dynamite:
Winners
Jimmy Carter - 2002 - Former US President - for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development
Kim Dae Jung - 2000 - South Korea - for his democracy and human rights efforts
Yasser Arafat - 1994 - Chairman of the Executive Committee of the PLO, President of the Palestinian National Authority - for efforts to create peace in the Middle East.
Nominees
Milosevic - 2000
Mussolini - 1935
Joseph Stalin - 1948 also 1945
Hitler - 1939 - nomination was withdrawn before the Committee considered it
Now I am not trying to liken Al Gore to any of these people nor am I trying to discredit the efforts of all the other worthwhile previous winners, but sometimes you need to take the big picture into consideration.
Thank you, British Academy
