Global Warming is Good

So I got to thinking about all of this global warming stuff and while I don't really believe it's as horrible as is being explained I got to thinking...Is it really that bad of a thingeven if it is? Can we not find good in the world getting warmer? Here are my random thoughts.


First of all proof is coming out that life did exist a handful of years ago and that it is colder now than it was then. Life existed then, it can exist now...it's not the end of days! Polar bears are not going to drown. See this article on Live Science where tree stumps are suddenly being exposed from the melting glacier. I don't have the link but there was another similar article where tools were found outside of a cave that appeared the people were mining in. It is believed the locals left the tools that winter and went down the mountain to the village, however due to a harsh winter and no thaw the mine was never exposed again until recently. While neither article explicitly states what the average temperature was then compared to now, a logical person (notice I said logical, that does rule out a lot of people) can conclude that the trees and tools were there when the freeze came and thus encased them in ice. Only now that it is warming up again are they being found. After all the article was not about the miracle of trees found growing inside a glacier.


Secondly, the main argument for why global warming exists is that it is due to an increased amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Now I never paid too much attention in science but I do believe CO2 is what trees and plants need to breathe in order to sustain life. They then convert that CO2 into oxygen for humans to breathe. Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't that be a good thing to have a little excess CO2 floating around?


So my argument is what is more productive spending all this money and effort to try and convince someone to buy a hybrid and stop driving their SUV or to go plant a couple trees? What is more asthetically pleasing a Honda Prius or a nice Willow tree? If you want to reduce CO2 why not get something that uses CO2? Nope too logical.

By the way I really hate that argument of sell your gas guzzler to buy a hybrid. Think about it you solved nothing. Economically all you have done is sold your car you may or may not have had some equity in and taken on more debt. Also you have not suddenly removed your SUV from the streets, unless you recylced it, odds are you traded it back in to the dealer who is turning around and selling it at a reduced rate to us poor folk who can not afford new vehicles. Tomorrow you are going to see the guy down the street driving it. Way to pitch in and do your part! On a side note a recent study showed that, of people who recently purchased a hybrid, something like only 24 percent did so because of the impact it will have on the environment while 57 percent did so because of how it will make them look, because of what others will think of them for owning a hybrid. But if you are one of the few who pay attention to commercials then you know that manufacturers are aware of this stat. After all, look at the commercial where the girl wants to be dropped off a few blocks from the movie theater because dad drives an SUV, as soon as he tells her it's a hybrid...well, then everything is cool!


Okay back to my points, so the world is getting warmer (1 degree F to be specific). Isn't warmer weather a good thing? Isn't that why people from the north are always migrating to the south for 6-8 months out of the year? They don't like the cold and with good reason.


There is compelling research to suggest that this warmer weather could save lives. How many times have you caught the flu in the middle of the summer? Generally you run a greater risk of influenza, pneumonia, bronchitis, depression and cardiac arrest during the cold months. So not only would the increase in death due to heat be offset by the decrease in lives saved due to the lack of cold but general productivity in the work place would increase. Do you know how much money companies lose due to decreased productivity during the winter months? Imagine those effects on the economy.

Economically let's look at the impact of warmer weather and not just on business productivity. Statistics show that on a national average it cost consumers approximately $576 per year to run their air conditioning units compared to around $874 for running a furnace. Research also shows that, given the current market for each product, a new upgraded AC could produce up to a 30% efficiency savings compared to only a 20% increase in efficiency of a furnace, thus producing even further savings. Also given today's drastically increasing cost of fuel, those numbers are likely to vary further.


Bottom line is this...next time some global warming hippie starts to harass you just tell them you are disappointed in them for trying to kill our elderly population or at the very least make everyone sick. Then explain to them that if they really cared about the environment and CO2 omissions that they need to do their part and keep their mouth shut, literally. Inform them that their breathing alone omits CO2, so ask them to hold their breath for as long as possible, otherwise they are just a hypocrite. After your done with them go hop in your SUV and plant a tree in your yard. That to me sounds like quality effort put forth to for the betterment of us all.
